Can I eat or drink before my anesthesia?

As a general rule, you should not eat or drink anything after midnight before your surgery. Under some circumstances, you may be given permission by your anesthesiologist to drink clear liquids up to a few hours before your anesthesia.

For younger children, the rules are more liberal, allowing the child to have food up to 6 hours prior to surgery, breast milk up to 4 hours prior to surgery, and clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to surgery.
