What is the normal recovery time for a general anesthetic?

Most people are awake in the recovery room immediately after an operation but remain groggy for a few hours afterward. Most people will not notice much effect from anesthetic medications after about 24 hours, but pain medications prescribed by your surgeon may need to be taken for several days afterwards. For this reason, we ask you to refrain from making important decisions or driving a car for 24 hours after your surgery. In those with significant medical

problems, complex or long surgeries or advanced age, the time for wake up may be longer.
